Many Species. One Planet; One Future.
The world observed the 38th Environment Day on 5 June with the theme of Many Species. One Planet. One Future. The slogan contains the norms of interdependence among the incalculable species in the planet.
The human society has in recent decades seen remarkable changes in information and communication technologies as well as in democratic movements based on the universal principles of democracy. Yet the world is not yet free from human evils indulged in the petty politics geared towards personal luxuries at the cost of human blood, sweat and natural resources.
The majority of people have been victimized by the disguised democracy. Unless the peoples of the world are not fully equipped with the information and knowledge about human rights and human ethics, they will not be able to assess world politics getting criminalized day and night. Criminalization of politics means that political decision-making process is heavily influenced by criminal minds.
It is universally true that the growing criminalization in the political sector becomes a key stimulator for heavily misusing or destroying environmental resources for personal luxuries by starving the world.
It is quite relevant in this context to refer to a UN Report of the Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change [2004]. It has cautioned the world community that environmental degradation is one of the major threats to human life. Other threats include poverty, infectious diseases, wars, genocides, different crimes, weapons of mass destruction and terrorism. These factors add to the environmental degradation, ultimately increasing the threat to life.
To truly internalize the significance of environment on which our life is based, it is, first of all, essential to inculcate moral culture in the minds of human generations. This is something–extremely important–that we have so far neglected due to our indulgence in hedonist politics opposed to the multi-faceted transformation of the human society.
Equally considerable is the fact that the world has been spending huge amount of money on slippery talks and crocodile tears regarding environmental degradation. Political gamblers remain busy in their money-attracts-money tournaments; they deliver speeches on environment on 5 June every year.
However, ordinary people like us must not get tired of emphasizing environmental degradation as a direct threat to human life. It is the peoples of the world who can play a pivotal role in generalizing the concept that environmental degradation is an issue—never less urgent and less important.
Combating moral and mental pollution is a mission of equal significance. Such a psycho-social type of pollution paves the way for environmental pollution. For example, the idea of embezzling natural resources while starving millions is an outcome of psycho-moral pollution, which results in the dullification of human mentality. This type of pollution kills human creativity and weakens their conscience while mechanizing habits. Malnourished conscience cannot perform gatekeeping appropriately.
Moreover, psycho-moral pollution impoverishes human mind, considered extremely rich in normal conditions. Democracy messiahs consider this psychologically and morally impoverished mind a golden opportunity to profit. They feel free to combine their media, money and muscle in the territories where psycho-moral poverty overrules the political rule. Thus, our environment has a basic tie to our psycho-moral environment purification of which is an ever-going process so long as the planet remains.
