Search and rescue activities can be carried out by `you’ and `me’ or in other words by any available person during an emergency. Its main objective is to save precious lives. However, skills are required to provide medical care, for environment in the disaster struck area, to hand-over recover and dispose-off the bodies as well as to distribute relief materials. The following are some of the important duties of an individual rescuer or a team:
*Collect information about the nature and extent of damage.
*Gather knowledge and information of further damage might occur.
*Get assistance and have ability to contact local people and other leaders.
*Follow the key principles during survey of the dead or the damage.
*Look-carry a visual inspection of the dead and the damage caused.
*Listen- listens to the grievances of the survivors and to all other sources of information.
*Feel- feels the gravity of the situation and has ability to assess the damage. Have a built –in capacity to respond.
