In the state of California, the United States Presidential election between Democratic Presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and GOP Presidential nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona is not the only hot topic right now. Back in June, same-sex marriage was legalized in the state.
Still, there are people in California not so thrilled about the notion. As a result, the proposal known as Proposition 8 was born. Under Proposition 8, a ban on same-sex marriage would be put into the California State Constitution. So far, proponents and opponents of Proposition 8 have been heated and passionate about it.
On the respective sides, Proposition 8 has become one of California’s costliest campaigns. Proponents and opponents of this measure have poured in millions of dollars as a result.
So far, same-sex couples have made it a personal mission to make sure Proposition 8 gets defeated on November 4. Couples that got married since June have been very active in canvassing neighborhoods to share their stories with voters.
As a result of the tension, this is one campaign race to carefully watch on November 4.
Reverend Geoffrey Farrow, a Catholic priest finds himself in a conundrum. In regards to Proposition 8, Farrow finds himself in the position to give solace to a mother with a lesbian daughter. In addition, Farrow offered solace to a boy who thinks he is gay. On a side note, the boy is eleven years old.
Farrow finds himself going up against other church leaders.
“By asking all of the pastors of the Diocese of Fresno to promote Catholics to vote yes on Proposition 8, the bishop has placed me in a moral predicament,” Farrow explained back in October.
He gave warning that voting “YES” on Proposition 8 could spell trouble. Also Farrow also revealed that he was gay. But, he disclosed it to a reporter and not the parish. As a result, he was relieved from his position.
According to opponents of Proposition 8, their civil rights are at stake.
While Proposition 8 is a political campaign, those that are fighting it are making it a personal mission. When Election Day on November 4 comes, this is a race that we all should keep an eye on.
