EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing”.
It was developed by a scientist Francine Shapiro after she discovered that eye movements help reduce the intensity and effect of traumatic memory.
Over time, Shapiro was able to carefully formulate a methodology to put her findings in EMDR into practice. This in such a way that its effectiveness in alleviating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), for example is no longer in doubt.
EMDR has since been adopted by the American Psychiatric Association and the Veterans Administration as a treatment for soldiers returning home from combat.
While the mechanics of all this is still largely unknown, there is no doubt that EMDR has helped over two million individuals over the years recover from trauma related mental illness.

As someone who has been diagnosed with PTSD myself, l have spent almost a year talking with professionals, writing to experts from all across the nation and seeking out advice on what would be the most effective treatment options available to me to help cope with PTSD. And what l noticed is that this subject of EMDR kept coming up over and over again. So much so that l had to take notice of it.
Sadly l have been unable, for whatever reason, to receive this treatment option through my mental health provider or through my Regional Behavioral Health Authority (Mercy Maricopa) in Phoenix, Arizona.
Repeated attempts on my part to engage members of my “Clinical Team”, which consists of psychiatrists, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, case manager and a treatment coordinator, among others have failed to convince them that this is a course of treatment which could benefit me in this situation.
Despite this opposition l remain firmly convinced that EMDR therapy may hold the key to my own recovery from PTSD.
Today l’m still having to fight people to try and get this as a treatment option in my case.
