Franklin Raines, the former head of defunct mortgage giant Fannie Mae, is the focus of a John McCain advertisement in which he accuses Barack Obama of consulting with Raines on economic issues.
The ad accuses Obama’s campaign of seeking Franklin Raines’ advise on mortgage and housing policy issues. They based their relationship on an April Washington Post article taken from an in-person interview with Raines. Raines has since denied that Obama’s campaign sought his guidance on economic matters.
Franklin Raines was forced to pay $25 million in April for contributing to Fannie Mae’s accounting problems. Raines, along with other Fannie Mae top executives, had adjusted the company’s accounting procedure to maximize their bonuses.
