U.S. Senator Mark Begich released a statement today in response to news that American forces have begun targeted bombings of ISIS oil assets near Raqqah, the headquarters of the Islamic State.
While details are limited it appears the U.S. military, along with a coalition including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, are bombing oil refineries in order to eliminate a major funding source for ISIS terrorist operations.
“From the very beginning I’ve urged attacks on ISIS oil assets so that we can cut off the terrorist organization’s income—estimated to be as much as $3 million per day,” said Begich.
“ISIS is making its money and funding its operations by smuggling oil. By taking out the refineries we are reducing its cash flow and undermining its radical, violent agenda. That is why I have been a vocal supporter of this strategy and am glad our regional partners are stepping up to the plate to join U.S. efforts. I urge continued airstrikes from the coalition so we can strategically target these terrorist resources.”
