It was definitely about to come. The government has been trying to protect the people from the spiralling global oil prices but eventually it had to let go. The losses have been huge and it will have to give way sooner or later.
The price hike is expected to be around Rs 16- 17 a littre. Such a huge increase is bound to face lot of protests, from political parties to transport workers. The Congress is going to have a tough time, and with elections not very far away, its readying itself to take this huge blow.. something they were so keen on avoiding.
A differential charging system, akin to road taxing scheme seems to be a plausible option. Those who will be flaunting their luxury cars and bikes, will be bearing much of the brunt. And those with old and pityful vehicles like the Bajaj scooter are going to be shown some mercy.
What is the answer? There are some good options you may consider. Car pooling is a good and viable solution – if 5 of you in close proximity to each other can manage to go to work together in 1 car, imagine the good it will cause to your pockets and the environment. Public transport, if you have easy access to it seems to be cheaper and quicker at the end of the day. Get a season ticket for the local train if you can.
The unprecedented increase in vehicles, due to people becoming richer and automobiles gettting cheaper, was bound to have its effects some day. So lets brace up and face it.
