Somali pirates hijacked a German ship with 17 crew members onboard overnight, a regional maritime official said on Saturday.
Andrew Mwangura, the East Africa’s Coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP), said the ship, the Patriot, was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen. But he cannot confirm the nationalities of the crew.
There are increased piracy-incidents along the Horn of Africa region. Foreign warships are patrolling the seas around Somalia and have stepped up their action against the pirates over the past weeks, freeing a number of ships.
Somalia has had no stable government since 1991, fuelling the lawlessness that has allowed piracy to thrive along the world’s most dangerous waters.
