Global Sun Solutions says that improvements in logistics systems and wider credit card usage will underpin a boom in Southeast Asian e-commerce.
Analysts at Global Sun Solutions have told investors that the e-commerce market in Southeast Asia is poised to boom as internet and credit card penetration deepens and logistics systems improve within the populous region.
The continuing proliferation of low-priced smartphones and mobile internet solutions means that an increase in e-commerce activity is inevitable. Currently, e-commerce accounts for a mere 0.2% of all retail activity in the region which includes Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.
According to Carl Ruse-Meinhoff, Chief Executive Officer at Global Sun Solutions, “Our analysis teams were asked to prepare research that asked important questions about regional consumer habits and whether what was happening in the US and Europe could repeat itself in the ASEAN region. After painstaking investigation, they came to the conclusion that a dramatic increase in e-commerce was almost inevitable given the rapid growth in smartphones, tablets and social networking to which hundreds of millions of people in the region have taken to like ducks to water.”
Global Sun Solutions says that traditional bricks and mortar retailers must move quickly to make sure they are well-represented and take advantage of a $25 billion opportunity.
“The $25bn figure represents 8% of the region-wide consumer spending,” said Steven Aaron, recently-appointed vice-president with Global Sun Solutions. “We think the time is ripe for big international logistics and payments systems players and their smaller regional and local counterparts to look at how they can grab a piece of this very large pie and we’re busy identifying innovative companies who need to raise funds to compete in what promises to be a hotly-contested marketplace,” he added.
