Global Sun Solutions: Logistics companies UPS and FedEx say they expect record number of shipments over the holiday season this year.
According to Global Sun Solutions, E-commerce shipments over the holiday season are set to hit record levels and will boost revenues at logistics companies like FedEx and UPS in the United States, the UK’s Royal Mail and Germany’s Deutsche Post.
With the advent of email and other methods of written communication, traditional core business streams have steadily shrunk over the years but the rise of online retail has seen a stark revival in fortunes for national and large-scale private carriers.
“Much of the revenues at operators like UPS and FedEx is derived from the sheer weight of demand from the likes of eBay and Amazon not to mention a veritable legion of other e-commerce operators both foreign and domestic,” said Steven Aaron, Vice President at Global Sun Solutions.
Both UPS and FedEx say this will have to hire more than 100,000 additional seasonal staff between them to handle the weight of demand in the run up to the festive season and the weeks beyond but also to help avoid problems like those which hampered deliveries in the run up to Christmas.
Though the opportunity presented by online retail is immense, both companies have learned that there are also pitfalls. In 2013, a rush of late orders meant that somewhere in the region of 2 million express packages failed to be delivered by their Christmas Eve deadlines.
Despite the backlash from customers, however, evidence has emerged that much of the blame for the late deliveries rested with retailers who over-promised on last-minute deliveries.
Global Sun Solutions says that it sees the continuing penetration of online retail as being good for logistics companies going forward.
