Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Dealt 103-89 Setback at No. 10 Adelphi
Playing another tough team during a tough schedule, Goldey-Beacom competed throughout but still came up on the wrong end of a 103-89 contest at 10th-ranked Adelphi in Garden City, NY.
It was bad enough for the Lightning opening the season against defending national champion Bentley. Now throw in the fact Goldey-Beacom played an Adelphi squad which fell to Bentley in the last year’s Northeast-10 Conference final and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Goldey-Beacom held its own in the early going, but by the end of the half found itself in a 50-33 hole despite eight points apiece from senior Lilian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) and freshman Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA). Calli Balfour scored 13 points in the stanza with Ahn-Dao Tran and Sierra Clark adding eight apiece for the Panthers.
The Lightning came out smoking in the second half with four 3-pointers in the first 2 1/2 minutes to close to 57-47. Freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) hit two of them with Chukwueze and senior Taylor Leonard (Lake Katrine, NY) adding one apiece.
But the Panthers emerged from a time out by scoring the next seven points, keyed by Tran’s 3-pointer, to take a 64-47 lead with 15:44 left.
Bryson ended with a season-best 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting with six rebounds, Bruno poured in 19 points, Chukwueze had 17 and eight rebounds with sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) adding 13 points for the Lightning (2-8). The visitors shot 48 percent (31-of-64) from the floor and were 9-of-19 from beyond the arc.
Balfour poured in 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting, Tran had 21 points with six assists and Clark netted 16 points for the Panthers (9-0), who shot 54 percent (44-of-82) from the field.
