In one of the most bizarre stories in the NFL this year, the Denver Broncos got a first year, unproven, gunslinger coach,Josh McDaniel who immediately drove off the team’s franchise quaterback, Jay Cutler. Most people will agree that this is not the best way to start off witha new team but, besides losing the best player on the team, the franchise has been embarrassed. As this soap opera played itself out in the media, there was a lot of finger pointing going on and a lot of denying reports. The bottom line is that nobody won except the San Diego Chargers who are now counting all the AFC championships that they are going to win. While both the Broncos and the Bears are saying that they are very happy with the trade and both the quarterbacks are saying that they too are very happy with the deal, it will take years before a clear winner is determined. the Broncos lost an All Pro quarterback, who at 25, has many more great years ahead of him in the league. The Bears gave up a quarterback with a better winner percentage that Cuttler and two #1 round draft choices.
This entire episode has been hard to understand and hard to figure out whom is telling the truth. Cutler said that he didn’t really want to be traded but, in weeks prior to the trade, he, not only, listed his Denver house for sale but also the nearby house of his parents.
In Denver, the Broncos are king and the star quarterback is idolized but Cutler not only hurt his status but he destroyed it. Despite only a .500 winning percentage, Denver fans clearly supported Cutler. However, with his childish attitude, in just a couple of weeks, he destroyed all that. If he is to be successful, he will need to develop a much tougher leadership attitude.
Earlier, late last year, another high profile, big name player, Alan Iverson, was traded out of Denver. Unlike Cutler, fans were disappointed to see him leave. You see, Iverson left with class, professionalism, and the hearts of the Denver fans.
The media has saturated everyone with the details of the Cutler deal so there sould be no surprises to anyone. But for Denver fans, as they see Cutler leave, don ‘t let the door hit you on the way out.
