Enterprising firms sensing a business opportunity have now chipped in with GPS (Global Positioning System) – enabled mobile phones which are set to hit the market soon to help parents to keep track of their children. The managing director Ashutosh Pande, Sirf Technology, a silicon valley- based GPS chip manufacturing company, says “The system is very simple. The mobile phone is GSM and GPS enabled, which means one can know exactly where the phone is through satellite transmission”. “The best thing is that one can easily decide the area of activity for the child. Let’s say the parent has encircled the school that his child goes to and its nearby areas, the cell phone will automatically send SMSs to the four members fed into it as soon as the child steps out of the encircled area before the stipulated time” he said.
GPS enabled cell phones meant for senior citizens would also hit the market simultaneously. Pande says that “You never know when senior citizens need emergency service, hence the phone is again based on same GPS system by which with just one click on the large emergency button, alert SMSs would be send to four predefined numbers, so if one of the number is that of the family doctor, timely medical assistance can be given”.
