This July, Japan will be this year’s head of the G-8 summit. The summit will be taking place on the island of Hokkaido. This time, the focus of this year’s G-8 summit will be green jobs to curb the change of climate along with inequalities on both an economic and regional level.
This will be the first time that the members of the G-8 will be talking about labor and the environment together. In short, this gives the implication that the main focus of the 2008 G-8 summit are “going green” and “green jobs.” The members of the G-8 are composed of: Great Britain, United States, Russia, France, Canada, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
Japan hopes to use one initiative as an example called “Cool Biz” which has been in effect for almost three years. This would be an attempt to reduce the use of air conditioning and reduce gases that contribute to global warming. In this initiative, it campaigns of not wearing jackets and/or ties during the summer time.
The talk of green jobs could also expand towards health and fitness.
It is highly likely that the United States will be playing a strong roll in this year’s summit. Green jobs have been part of the platform of the economy which has been used by Democratic frontrunners Senator Hillary Clinton of New York and Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.
The economy has been at the top of the minds of most Americans according to recent polls. So far, Obama and Clinton have the advantage of presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain or Arizona. While the economy was deemed the number one issue, Iraq came in at a distant second.
It is highly likely that McCain and the eventual Democratic nominee may play a role in this year’s G-8 summit.
There is a high chance that in a sense, the economy will be the main topic of the summit for this year.
