It is heartening to note that in Gujarat, the assembly elections conducted in the year 2007, have been very fair and free from any complaints like malpractices, booth capturing, rigging etc. Thanks to our independant election commission for its constant vigil over the election and for the outcome of the result devoid of any complaint.Of course Narendra Modi, the charismatic personality,to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the third term on 27 th of December, was behind the outcome of the election and as a torchbearer of BJP in Gujarat. It should also be noted that Gujarat has been the bastion of BJP since 1985 and they have not lost an assembly election since then.
But when we begin to analyse the outcome in terms of seats and other aspects,BJP has got 117 seats, less by 10 seats that it won in the year 2002,the congress I has gained marginally by winning 62 seats and by others 3 seats. While on the one hand we are hailing the success of democracy in Gujarat, we should not forget that Modi is a proclaimed Hindutva leader and his campaign orchestrating communalism won him favours re-electing him for the third time.Congress leader Sonia has said that sometimes fasicm wins and it even gets re-elected.The statement is not without substance. We also know about the famous fake encounter case of a muslim, masterminded by none other than the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the fake encounter case has been openly admitted by the Gujarat government in the Supreme Court of India. It actually indicates how unscrupulous Modi as a politician and how far he is communal. We should not forget that India has proclaimed itself as a secular country. And the success attained by the communal forces led by Narendra Modi, does not augur well for the future and the progress of India.
The main opposite party for Modi in Gujarat, is Congress I, and its strategy in the Gujarat election, directionless campaign etc are attributed as causes for its failure. One should not forget, in the year 2004,the Congress won an impressive 12 Lok Sabaha seats out of 26 seats and in terms of assembly segments it had got 91,, in the 12 loksabha seats, whereas BJP had got only 89 assembly segments for the 14 seats in the Lok Sabaha Elections. But after the Lok Sabaha elections, Congress failed to consolidate its gains and it frittered it away in the recently held assembly elections.
One remarkable advantage to the Congress I and its allies is that the outcome of the Gujarat elections had made their alliance its partners more strong and cohesive and more determined towards the cause of secularism.Indeed a good omen !
