Members of the Hawker Sangram Committee are preventing RPG Group’s Spencer’s hypermart from opening its mega store at Rashbehari Avenue. This new hypermart is a 36000 square foot store.
Rashbehari Avenue is one of the busiest and the most famous market in Calcutta, India. There are around 6000 hawkers on Rash Behari Avenue and according to estimates, the 6000 hawkers on the road each earn around Rs 2000 a day. These 6000 hawkers are the members of the Hawker Sangram Committee.
In order to protect their business these hawkers have demanded some conditions which Spencer’s hypermart must met. These terms & conditions demanded by them are :
- Spencer’s hypermart should not sell any product which are similar to those being sold by the 6000 hawkers on Rashbehari Avenue.
- Food should be sold only in bulk quantity.
- Fruits and vegetables should be sold only in units of 3kg and above.
- Onions & potatoes should be sold in bulk, in units of 6kg and above.
- Spices should be sold in units of 500gm and above in packed pouches.
- Only branded rice should be sold in units of 3kg and above.
- No non – branded garments can be sold. Only branded garments should be sold. These apparel should be sold with a minimum price of Rs 300.
- A two member committee should be formed to review every week whether the conditions are being adhered to. This two member committee will comprise of representatives from Spencer’s hypermart and the Hawker Sangram Committee.
Spencer’s hypermart can open its mega store only after all the terms & conditions demanded by the Hawker Sangram Committee have been met .
