Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Chairperson, Justice Syed Bashir-ud-Din has said that Human Rights is a vast concept that encompasses respect for rights of the people as well ensuring safety of lives and property of the public at large.
At a debating competition, “In the opinion of the House, respect for Human Rights strengthens law of the land and weakens it otherwise”, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), here today, Justice Bashir who was the Chief Guest said.
Elaborating, the Chairperson said that every government is committed to honour the Human Rights for a just society for which in 1997, the State Government introduced Human Rights Protection Act.
Calling for more such debates on the issue of Human Rights to make people aware about their rights, Justice Bashir said such occasions allow people to know each other’s views with regard to Human Rights. He said that JKP and other security agencies are working in the troubled State for the last two decades and many steps have been taken to respect the human rights and ensure safety of lives and property of the people.
The Director General (CID) Dr. Ashok Bhan, while addressing the gathering, lauded the role of JKP and other security agencies in protecting the Human Rights of the people in difficult situations, under which the police and paramilitary forces are operating in the State. He said that during the debate, several speakers raised various valuable points which will go a long way in protecting the Human Rights, adding we must admit that Human Rights violations are to be condemned at all levels.
Praising the great record of the J&K Police and paramilitary forces and the Army on the issue on Human Rights across the country, Dr. Bhan said “We should not malign the forces and the system as a whole, if some individuals commit mistakes”.
Earlier, Mr. Pankaj Saxena, DIG (CID) Jammu, welcomed the participants and gave a brief resume of the debate.
Several speakers spoke on the issue of Human Rights during the day-long debate and threw light on different aspects of human and basic rights of the people.
During the debate, more than six speakers spoke in favour of motion and some spoke against. Cash Prizes and certificates were awarded to the best speakers.
The first prize of Rs. 3,000 was won by Sub-Inspector, Gurpreet Singh while as the second prize went of Rs. 2,000 went to Constable, Rakesh Kumar. The third prize of Rs. 1,000 was bagged by Prosecuting Officer, Manzoor Ahmed.
At the conclusion of the function, DIG, CID, Mr. A. G. Mir, thanked the participants for making the event a success.
Among others, the function was attended by IGPs, Mr. K. Rajendra, Mr. Gopal Reddy, Mr. S. M. Sahai and Mr. Farooq Ahmed, DIG, Jammu, Mr. A. Q. Manhas, delegates from ICRC, besides senior and retired police officers.
