In a pathetic incident in a Burdwan District village about 150km from Calcutta, Shrabani Ghose, 23 and a mother of 16 months old baby was first hacked and then strangulated to death allegedly by her Husband Ashok, 27, brother in law Ashis, 25, and other members of the house hold, on the night of July’22, just because color of her skin was black.
As per the confession of Ashis, his brother killed her ‘Boudi’ (meaning sister-in-law in Bengali) as he did not like her dark skin. He said, “Dada had not seen ‘Boudi’ before marriage. When he saw her, he did not like her. This led to frequent fight between the two.”
According to primary police investigations, the woman used to be taunted for her black skin since her marriage about two and half years ago. Kalpana Basak, a neighbours of the diseased, told the police that Indrani, the mother-in-law of the diseased often used to taunt the diseased for her skin color. Another neighbor Gour Mondal also corroborated the torture and said, “The entire family used to torture her.”
The officer in charge of Kalna Police Station, Sanat Das said, “Around 11 at night, there was an altercation between husband and wife. The neighbors also heard heated exchange between Shrabani and her brothers-in-law. It appears that it was during this time her husband and his brothers attacked her with sharp weapons and then strangulated her”. The murder weapons are yet to be recovered.
Nabakumar, the father of the girl said that his son-in-law informed him that Shrabani is ill and hospitalized. “When I reached hospital at 2pm today (23rd July), I found my daughter lying on a stretcher and the doctor told me that she has died. I knew that my daughter used to be tortured but I never thought that she would be murdered,” said her father.
Sub-divisional police officer Arup Roy said, “although postmortem report will be awaited but it is a case of murder as is clear from the injuries on her head and neck and the strangulation mark on her throat.”
