With the advent of internet and advancement of technology, cyber crime of one kind or another has always been on the increase. ICICI Bank in its ‘Customers First Series’, an initiative to educate the account holders has issued guidelines which if followed would help the account holders to protect their accounts as well as balances from ‘Phishers and Fraudsters’.
Through its publicised advertisements, the Bank has warned that the fraudsters are on the prowl to extract your Bank Account information that too from you only with a fraudulent motive.
Your email id is the first target through which a Phisher commences the operation. Just because you receive an email with your correct id dose not mean that it is a genuine one. with so many social network operating, this is the easiest thing that can be obtained.
By sending you an email, the Phisher would try to obtain key security components of your internet banking account; (e.g.), your user ID, Password, date of birth, account number or answers to such questions as your mother’s maiden name (which helps you to remember your password).
With a view to conceal the original from fake, they would create the mail in such a way that it looks like the original. To give it authenticity, they would copy the name of the Bank and its logo. More often than not these mails would contain a link and you would be authorised to furnish the data by entering it. The link would appear similar to as though you are logging into your bank account.
The Bank has prescribed following precautions to protect yourself from falling prey to such mails.
(a) Never furnish any of your particulrs to strangers.
(b) No bank would ask for updating or verification of your account details through emails.
(c) Never fall a prey to emails asking for such particulars through a link.
(d) Phishers mails may contain grammatical and spelling errors as these mails are meant for masses and not personalised ones. The contents may be drafted with you view to scare you. For instance, it may warn that your account would be suspended for failing to furnish the details.
The best way to protect yourself is to ignore such mails, directing them to trash and also informing your bankers.
