New Delhi/Jammu/Srinagar, September 01 (Scoop News) – The President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil in her message on the occasion of Janmashtami, which is being celebrated tomorrow, has said: –
“On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I extend my greetings and best wishes to all my fellow citizens.
May this festival inspire all of us to lead lives in which we ceaselessly strive for amity and unity with all our compatriots”.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has greeted the Nation on the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami.
In a message, the Prime Minister said that the festival of Janmashtami celebrates the life and eternal teachings of Lord Krishna – discipline, knowledge, and selfless action.
“May the festival inspire us towards the goal of banishing ignorance and poverty through education and herald peace and prosperity for all,” the Prime Minister added.
Meanwhile the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N. N. Vohra, has also greeted the people on Janamashtami, hoping that this auspicious occasion would be a harbinger of peace, progress and prosperity and further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, amity and harmony in the State.
In his message of felicitations, the Governor observed that the divine message of Lord Krishna, enned in the mad Bhagvad Gita, exhorts mankind to strive for the ultimate truth and to do our duties to the best of our ability without worrying about the fruits thereof. He added that these teachings provide a firm foundation for building a harmonious society.
On this auspicious occasion, the Governor prayed for the well-being of the people of the State.
J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has extended the greetings to the people of the State on the auspicious occasion of Janamashtami.
In his felicitation message, Omar said that the occasion would be harbinger of peace, progress and prosperity and hoped that it would also strengthen the bond of amity and communal harmony among people of the State.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also prayed for the welfare of the people of the State.
It may be mentioned here that Janamashtami is reffered as the birth of Lord Krishna, this is the festival and it celebrated in the month of Sravana or Savana.Lord Sri Krishna was born on the ‘Rohini’ nakshatram (star). It is generally celebrated in the month of August-September according to the Christian Calendar. Janmashtami is celebrated for over two days as “Rohini” nakshatra and Ashtami may not fall on the same day. The first day known as Krishnashtami, as the birth of Bhagwan Krishna falls on the eighth day after Raksha Bandhan, which generally falls in the month of August. The second day is known as Kalashtami.
It was only on the eighth day of the second fortnight, in the month of Sravana when, the moon entered the house of Vrishabha in Rohini Nakshatra (star) that Lord appeared. According to Barhapatyamana, the month of Sravana corresponds to the month of Bhadrapada Krishnapaksha. Lord was born in the year of Visvavasu, appx. 5,227 years ago.
The actual festivities begin during midnight in this 48 hour period. The celebration reaches its peak at midnight, with the birth of Lord Krishna, with lot of hymns, arti taking place and blowing of the Conch (shankh), rocking the cradle of Lord. The idol of lord is bathed with Panchait (A mixture of milk, ghee, oil, honey and Gangajal). The Panchait is later distributed as Prasad to the devotees along with other sweets. While some Fast on the first day and break it at midnight for others the fasting continues for both days. The period coincides with rainy season.
