Infertility and its causes
Infertility is the inability of a woman to get pregnant after a period of one to two years despite regular or normal sexual intercourse with her male partner during ovulation or without family planning.
It can also be defined as the inability of a woman to carry pregnancy due to miscarriage. Infertility is also a common case among men. In their own case, it is their inability to impregnate a woman after a year or more of regular sexual intercourse during a woman’s ovulation.
On global basis, about 18 – 20 percent of married couples are infertile. In developed countries, however, the figure may be as low as 18 or 17 because they have enhanced medical conditions. But in underdeveloped countries, the figure is approaching 22 – 23 percent.
In a country, where there is access to good medical infrastructure, the population suffering from infertility may be less, but where there is no adequate health facilities, the number will be higher.
The common belief among Nigerians is that infertility is caused by women. Consequently, the man who may even be having the problem may not even bother to go for medical check-up or treatment. He would rather expect his wife to go for medical examination. On the other hand, the wife may put the blame on her husband. In the meantime, both of them will remain childless and continue to live with the problem. This has led to broken marriages.
According to a recent research, infertility is known to be majorly caused by infection which ranges from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) such as gonorrhea and syphilis. It blocks the passage of the sperm. Also, the kind of foods people eat create problem for the sperm. They damage the sperm. Such diet include alcohol, tobacco smoking and the use of artificial sweeteners like saccharin.
The major cause of infertility is the inability of a man to have sexual intercourse with the opposite sex even though he is fertile. This is because he have the problem of erectile dysfunction which usually leads to poor erection or quick ejaculation as well as poor libido.
Low sperm count is another factor responsible for infertility. On the part of women, infertility is caused by fibroid. This is very rampant among women who suffer infertility condition. Some women suffer from painful or irregular menstruation or ovulation. Some women also suffer from leucorhea which means eda in Yoruba. It is a condition whereby the sperm released by the man during sexual intercourse fails to settle in the woman’s ovary but returns and pours away after ejaculation. This is caused by a serious infection. Women who suffer from fibroid hardly get pregnant. Some of them have regular miscarriage in the early stage of their pregnancy.
Diabetes, high blood pressure, pile have been proved by research as being other causes of infertility.
