A leading expert in data security has identified the internet as a vital part of everyday organisations.
Guy Bunker, who is chief scientist at Symantec, has urged those who do business online to ensure that their websites are stable to prevent loss of customers.
As well as businesses, charities are increasingly relying on the internet for their custom, with donorschoose.org being an example of an entirely web-based fundraising institution.
Mr Bunker said: ‘For many businesses, the internet is their sole source of income – not only would they lose money from the site being down, but also from losing their customers – who would defect to another service.’
The scale of the problem was recently illustrated when Sainsbury’s online service was suspended for a day in June, which eventually cost the grocer more than £1 million in lost sales.
Mr Bunker added that he believed that most technical issues for websites going down was as a result of hardware breaking down or networks failing.
