Jinx in politics
Whether one likes it or not, politicians are superstitious. And there are compelling reasons for that.
Take Karnataka political scene, for instance. There should have been transfer of power on October 2, if MrKumarasamy, the chief minister, had his way. Family factors came in the way, the transfer issue became too complicated and the resultant was Pesident’s rule as provided in the Constitution .
Just before this , Mr Kumaraswamy had visited Chamarajanagar, a place which has the reputation of bringing down the leaders to their heels from epic times. In fact Arjuna met his comeuppance at this spot, from the son whom he had forgotten because of a curse, or so the legend goes.
Another place too commands this kind of power, Anegundi near Hospet. Widely believed to be the Kishkinda of old, Anegundi was the hillock where Sugriva took shelter . His brother, vali, was mightier than Ravana, the demon. Yet he was felled by Lord Rama. Whoever enters this territory will meet his doom, says the local legend.
Now to fround realities. Kumaraswamy has had a surgery performed on his heart, Some of Mr Devegowda’s associates have crossed over to other parties and the elections, if held later than May may deprive Gowda family of clout.
As if these are not troubles enough, Mr Devegowda’s car met with an accident and the offending cab driver was counseled and sent away. As fate would have it, some of Mr Gowda’s followers, who were more loyal to the cause, bamboozled the driver’s family . scared, the youth tok the easy way out by ending his life. It happened on the day after amavasya, that is new moon day. One of the most popular chief ministers, Devaraj Urs, met with a similar accident, and was trounced in the elections held later.
Mr gowda who is isolated now, has to launch a campaign for regaining the ground lost. His son, the former chief minister, cannot take the strain like old. So to atone for the mistakes, Mr Gowda has taken to the path of appeasement of gods. One hopes the gods will be more sympathetic to his cause because he has certainly lost popularity. He is seen more as a family politician, and the jibe is that he would ask as many number of sons as the numbers in the state legislature…….. if the Lord were to grant him a boon.
One segment of society is extremely happy with these developments. The soothsayers..
If governments are run on these weak willed leaders who spend more time stargazing than checking the official files, all that we can do is to pray that these leaders gain wisdom. In god’s scheme of things, man is co-creator. The ones who devalue this status do it at the risk of denigrating themselves and their position
In the eyes of man as well as god.
