Srinagar,July 23 (Scoop News) -– Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah reviewed the functioning and preparedness of State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to meet eventualities and manage disasters at a meeting of the Authority he chaired here on Monday afternoon.
The Chief Minister stressed on factoring in experts in the management and preparedness mechanism earmarked for the 3-tier Disaster Management Authority in the State. He also opined that a focused central mechanism is required to make the Management Authorities at District, Divisional and State levels more effective, pro-active, alert and well prepared.
The meeting was attended by Minister for CAPD, Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla, Minister of State for Power, Shabir Ahmad Khan, Chief Secretary, Madhav Lal, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof. Talat Ahmad, Principal Secretaries, M. I. Khandey, B. B. Vyas, B. R. Sharma, Commissioner Secretary Revenue, B. A. Runiyal, various Administrative Secretaries, Prof. V. K. Gour and senior officers.
In a PowerPoint presentation, Commissioner Secretary Revenue, B. A. Runiyal gave detailed account of the action taken on various decisions taken in the previous meeting. He also threw light on the recommendations made by the SDMA in its last meeting pertaining to making Disaster Management Programme inclusive and broad based.
Prof. Gour also made PowerPoint presentation in the meeting dealing with nature, technicality and other aspects of disasters taking place in the State with special reference to earthquakes. He gave details of earthquakes and their impact since 24th September 1501 to 8th October 2005. He also made recommendation for involving experts in the management and preparedness programme for disasters.
