J&K Governor stresses on promotion of sports

 

 

Jammu,December 14 (Scoop News) – The Governor,  N. N. Vohra, declared open the All India Inter-University Fencing Championship for Men and Women at the Gymnasium Hall of the Jammu University here today.

In all, teams from 35 universities from across the country are participating in this 3-day sports event as against the participation of 18 universities last year.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor observed that sports are an essential component for balanced personality development of the youth. He added that it was necessary for all possible support being provided to the Jammu University for the promotion of sports and games. He honoured the players of the Jammu University who had won the overall Championship at the last year’s All India Inter-University Fencing Championship held at Punjab University, Chandigarh. The Governor congratulated the Men and Women teams for their last year’s performance and hoped that they would demonstrate a still better game during this year’s Championship.

The Governor lauded the Jammu University Vice Chancellor, the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education and all those associated with organizing this important sports event. He expressed his happiness that as compared to the participation of 18 universities in the last year’s Championship, their number is almost double this year, which indicates the progressive popularity which fencing is gaining in the country.          

Earlier, the players participated in the March Past and took oath before they were introduced to the Governor, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The Governor also witnessed the demonstration bouts held at the inaugural function.

The Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni, in his welcome address, dwelt on the achievements registered by the varsity in various sports and other extra-curricular activities. He said that continuous efforts are being made to make Jammu University a major sporting varsity in the country along with achieving excellence in academics.  

The Director, Sports and Physical Education, Jammu University, Prof. Dhian Singh Bhau, presented the report and gave details of the participating teams. 

The Registrar, Jammu University, Dr. P. S. Pathania, presented a Vote of Thanks.

The Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone,  Ashok Gupta, Deans, Heads of Departments, Faculty Members, players and sports lovers in large numbers were present on the occasion.
