Srinagar, May 14 (Scoop News) – Jammu and Kashmir is open to business for trade, tourism and handicrafts, and is enthusiastic in developing sustained, long-term and durable buyer-seller relations to revive the significant economic chapters in these fields, said Chief Minster, Omar Abdullah here on Saturday while inaugurating the 3rd International Buyer-Seller Meet.
The Chief Minister said the State has passed through a difficult phase and situation is gradually becoming conducive and palatable to revive the economic activities especially in the field of world famous handicrafts which received a considerable set back during the 20 years of disturbance.
“The artisans here possess a kind of magic in their hands and create handicrafts of mind boggling skills and surprising art”, he said adding that the carpets, brass and copper works, papier Machie, pashmina shawls, walnut wood carving, embroidery and other items mesmerize the lovers of handicrafts all across.
Omar Abdullah said that time has come when joint efforts by all the stakeholders in handicrafts sector are made to restore the pristine glory of State’s handicrafts and make the skills of artisans visible globally. However, he added that right and quality handicrafts should be showcased to avoid any bad impression about the genuineness of the products.
Expressing happiness over the efforts for organizing events like Buyer-Seller Meet, the Chief Minister said, “we should look forward to rope in more and more international buyers to the State and not only ensure selling of handicraft items right on spot but develop a long term and sustained relations with the people in the trade”.
“I am looking for the day when buyers from national and international market outnumber the sellers in such meets”, he said and assured all possible help to the handicraft industry for its growth and development. He said betterment and flourishing of artisans is imperative to the sustenance and growth of this sector and emphasized on the welfare of the artisans associated with handicraft sector.
The Chief Minister appreciated the personal interest of Union Minister for Forests and Environment, Jai Ram Ramesh, who was present on the occasion, in the development of handicrafts sector in the State and said that his good office will be utilized to resolve the issues in the
Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister for Forests and Environment highlight the initiative taken by him as the Minister of State for Industries and Commerce for launch of buyer-seller meet in the State.
Lauding the young and energetic leadership of Omar Abdullah in steering the State out of the difficulties on development and other fronts, Jai Ram Ramesh said that his personal and the support of his Ministry will always be available to the State wherever and whenever required.

The event was organized by Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) in collaboration with Jammu Kashmir Bank. More than 40 stalls have been established in the 3-day Buyer-Seller Meet from 14 to May 17, 2011 at SKICC.
The Chief Minister after inaugurating the event inspected the stalls and interacted with the stall holders and buyers. The buyers from national and international level have arrived to look for their interests in the handicraft items and make purchases.
Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani and Advisors to the Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul and Devenser Singh Rana were also present on the occasion.
