Jammu, March 5 (Scoop News) – The Department of Law, University of Kashmir in collaboration with the Indian Society of Victimology is organizing a 2-day Workshop on “Victim Compensation” on the 7th and 8th of March 2011.
Delving details on the theme of the workshop, Head and Dean Faculty of Law, Prof. Mehraj – ud – Din said, “Over the years, legal experts and practitioners have come to a consensus that the present criminal justice system is ‘accused’ oriented. Everyone talks about rights of the accused person and the victim or his kith and kin are totally ignored”.
He said that it was being realized the world-over now that the victim has a very vital role as far as the criminal justice process is concerned. “S/he cannot be ignored at stages like framing of charges, trial process, and conviction process or even at the sentencing stage” he asserted.Prof. Mehraj – ud – Din further added that recent judgments of the Supreme Court and various High Courts have shown a tendency for award of compensation to the victim. “In order to discuss all these matters and other related issues, a core group of senior academicians from across the country including local experts shall be participating in the workshop” he said.
