The recent report of the United Nations concerning the spate of killings of media practitioners and some activists believed to be affiliated with the Communist Party of the Philippines has opened up the eyes of the world as to how the freedom of expression is being muted to pursue the military’s plan of eradicating those whom they believed as thorns in their backs.
And there seems to be no clear explanation as to why these spate of killings continue despite the government’s pronouncements that these criminal acts should be stopped and that suspects, whether they be military men or hired goons, be brought to the bars of justice. And true to its commitment, arrests were made, whereby some soldiers were implicated while others have remained unsolved up to this writing.
Now, cause-oriented and media organizations are clamoring for the governemtn to stop these killings, if only to test the sincerity of the administration on its promise that everything would be taken cared of. The country has a justice system in place but it seemed that some military and police organizations still prefer the summary execution because it is less tedious and fast to eliminate those who rise up against questionable government policies.
That’s the problem in a purely democratic country because anybody is free to do whatever he thinks of doing to get back and get even with you. That’s the crab mentality that most Filipinos have. We are so emotional that we tend to become vindictive when our egos are hurt. As of this writing, unity has become a big problem for most people, especially those in politics. Until now, the government is in a limbo as to whether it should pursue the plan to go back to the two-party system like what the United States has at the moment. And it is doubtful that this will ever push through as planned, knowing the Filipinos’ way of mentality. If we have the opportunity to do what we think is reasonable, we will do it for our own selfish interests to the detriment of the country’s development goals.
