Choosing a new mobile phone has always been a case of style rather than technology for most people, so with fashion designers branching into the communications scene there’s a lot more choice for the fashion-conscious.
But how do these trendy mobiles compare with standard designs? The sleek LG Prada mobile flew off the shelves, instantly becoming a much sought after item.
Aesthetically, it is undeniably cool. The touch screen dominates the front of the phone, with a choice of three themes:
Prada: plain black, sheek and understated.
Fish: blue screen with a goldfish swimming around leaving bubbles.
Butterfly: green/ blue screen with a butterfly flying around.
There is also a choice of clock for the display. An analogue clock brings a touch of retro, while the more discreet digital clock can be used to de-clutter the screen.
Visually then, this phone appeals to everyone, from the whimsical to the minimalist.
But how does it fare up on the practical side? With no keypad everything is done via the touch screen display. This, surprisingly, works very well. There is no stylus involved, and if you use anything other than your finger tip there will be no response. Something to bear in mind if you have long nails.
The icons in the menu are simple and obvious, making navigation a stress-free process. Four icons appear on the screen when it is unlocked, with shortcuts to the message menu, contacts list, and a dial pad should you wish to make a phone call instead of just using this as a fashion accessory.
The LG Prada boasts a digital camera and video recorder with flash and various settings such as negative, black and white, and sepia. There is a shortcut button to the camera on the side of the phone, which is a bit on the small side, but as this isn’t an item designed for the over-70s it doesn’t really matter.
As the screen is so big it would have been sensible to install a camera with more than 2mp, as some photos end up looking slightly pixilated when set as wallpaper.
There is also an MP3 player and FM radio which work very well.
It is the little touches that make this phone work. To set the alarm clock, for example, you tap the clock on the screen. And if you trace your finger around the screen the goldfish and butterfly will follow. The mobile comes with a black leather case and screen cleaning cloth, both stamped with Prada, implying that this is more of an accessory for the fashion rather than technology conscious among us.
If you want a mobile that is simple to use and doesn’t have complicated functions you will love the LG Prada. Your fingers might get cold as the touch screen refuses to work with gloves, but since when has fashion ever been comfortable?!
