Chinese Dub
A performance of Chinese Dub takes place on5th July at the Carling Academy. It is a dynamic partnership between acclaimed musician, Jah Wobble, and the oldest Chinese orchestra in Europe, the Pagoda Chinese Youth orchestra. This production aims to breathe new life into the way Chinese music is perceived and will be a fusion of dub music and Chinese melodies. Amongst the instruments used will be bass, drums, bamboo flutes, and the gourd pipe of Yunnan province.
Shakespeare in the City
Shakespeare in the City is a unique fringe celebration showcasing youth theatre performances from across the UK. Plays are performed at various venues between the 5th and 11th July.
Clipper Race
The 2007 – 2008 Clipper race will finish in Liverpool on 5th July. This race was the brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man ever to sail solo non-stop around the world. He wanted ordinary people to have the chance to experience the exhilaration of ocean racing. The race left Liverpool on 16th September 2007.
The Beat Goes On
The exhibition The Beat Goes On takes place between 12th July and 1st November at the World Museum on William Brown Street. Visitors will be able to explore Liverpool’s musical heritage ranging from The Cavern Club to Creamfields and from Billy Fury to the Zutons.
European Youth Parliament
Nearly 300 young people will gather at Liverpool’s St George’s Hall for the European Youth Parliament between 16th and 27th July. Participants from more than 30 European countries will take part in a variety of activities including teambuilding and committee work, culminating in the announcement of 15 resolutions which will be sent to the European Parliament.
John Lennon Songbook
John Wilson conducts the RLPO at the Philharmonic Hall on 18th July in the John Lennon Songbook concert. This show will feature especially orchestrated arrangements of Lennon’s musical output as a member of The Beatles and as a solo artist.
The Tall Ships Race
The spectacular start of the Tall Ships’ Race is expected to attract a million spectators to the banks of the River Mersey between 18th and 21st July.

Arabic Arts Festival
The UK’s only Arabic Arts Festival takes place at various venues. This celebration of Arabic culture in Liverpool will feature a performance by the Taoub-Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier accompanied by live Arabic music and traditional song. There will be an exhibition of contemporary art from the Middle East at the Open Eye Gallery and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will play two separate collaborative concerts with Lebanese composer and oud (Arabic lute) player Marcel Khalife and Palestinian singer/songwriter Amal Murkus, both at the Philharmonic Hall.
High Hopes
Commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company High Hopes is a co-production between Liverpool and Stavanger, the two European Capitals of Culture in 2008. This documentary series is a graphic example of what it’s like to be growing up in Liverpool and Stavanger in 2008 and is aimed at a young audience. It will be fast paced, packed with images, and have both emotional depth and strong storylines.
