Arun Sarkar, 59, died in Siliguri District Hospital on 4th July, during an altercation with a nurse of the hospital, who is said to have insulted the man as per the eyewitness son of the diseased. The nurse fled the hospital campus after the incident. Sarkar was an official of Siliguri court and had come to visit a relative in female ward of the hospital.
As per Abhijit, the son of the diseased, paramedical staff of the hospital asked him to bring three bottles of saline for the patient. As he came back at 7.15PM after purchasing the saline bottles, the nursed blocked him at the gate of the ward and refused to allow him as the visiting hour was over.
“My father then tried to convince the nurse to allow me to take the bottles to the patient, at which she raised her finger and told us to leave. When he told her to behave properly, she started insulting my father. That was too much for him and in a while he started collapsing. I tried to hold him back and people came forward to help.
Sarkar was immediately taken to the emergency, where the doctors pronounced him dead. The hospital superintendent Subal Dutta described the incident as ‘Unfortunate’ and said, “ I knew Mr.Sarkar personally and that he had undergone by pass surgery. We would investigate the incident.” A large police team was posted at the hospital as tension mounted in the area after the incident.
