The bridge collapse accident took place in the Chunchu village which is about three-hundred ten miles of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Many people were crossing over the 500 meter steel bridge which was suspended over the Bheri Rival. According to officials, they were trying to get to the local Christmas Day fair.
Those who have been injured were taken to local towns. However, Chunchu is in a remote area which has hampered any efforts to make a rescue attempt. Soldiers and police in the hundreds were rushed from the nearby towns Nepalganj and Surkhet to help with the rescue operation.
Upon nightfall, the operation was put to a stop. According to the officials, it is a very slim chance to find survivors.
The river is believed to have very strong currents making swimming across the river difficult. Some scrambled to safety as the winter flow of the river is lower. Most of those killed in the bridge accident were women and children.
It is possible that the number of missing could be in the hundreds.
“The remoteness of the area and poor communication facilities have delayed rescue efforts,” according to Anil Kumar Pandey, the chief district officer.
