Kathmandu, November 4, 2009: From early morning the situation in and around the valley was tensed with high security alert and police personnel running around the valley. The recent declaration of agitation to block the valley and to withhold operations in major administrative wings of government has tensed the situation among public and the government. The high priority areas around Singha Durbar (the main Administrative operational wing of government) and the District Administration Office (DAO) were seen tensed from early morning with protesters chanting anti government slogans.
Focusing the agitation, large numbers of security personnel were installed in the tensed areas. Recently on 1st November, 2009, the Maoist party announced a series of blockade program to pressurize the government. The declaration affected the market in the most possible way as scarcity of daily public goods has been seen and people are stocking daily useable good in quantities for their survival. According to the Party, “After a long struggle and we came in with people’s aspirations in the main stream politics, we did try to work our way but the orthodox thinking obstructed us in our way where we are bound to take this step. So we are back for struggle in a peaceful manner.”
The party has demanded to fulfill their terms and condition at any cost. The struggle committee has forwarded three main agendas
- Rectifying the unconstitutional move of the President
- Dissolving the current government
- Forming a Maoist led government
And if their agendas are not fulfilled the party has threatened the government to block the city. The party has further announced a strategic plan to block the city including the air ways to pressurize the government to agree to the agreement. On 3rd November after the request of the different ambassadors the air blockade program was postponed. Looking back to the past, the thing started from the controversial Sack of the Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) of Nepal Army Rookmangud Katawal. The then prime minister Maoist supreme Prachanda resigned from his post after the president rectified the sack specifying the termination to be politically influenced, in returned Prachanda resigned from his post stating the reinstate of the CoAS to be unconstitutional . The stress was further stretched with the disclosure of a series of tapes where Prachanda talks about their strategies to take over the country and Army which created a biz buzz against the party‘s image. The party from then has been obstruction the parliament focusing their demands and needs highlighting their majority.
