A Jharkhand Ex-Minister and present MLA, Ramesh Singh Munda was gunned down while he was addressing a prize giving ceremony for meritorious students at SS High School near state Capital Ranchi around 1.30 PM on 9th July’08.
Two of his bodyguards and a student aged 17 years were also killed. Some 20-25 insurgents in civil dress rushed to the dais while he was addressing the gathering and sprayed bullets from AK 47s and AK56s for about 10 minutes said Shesh Nath Singh, the only surviving body guard of the slain leader.
The dead bodyguards were identified as Shivnath Minz, 30, and Khurseed Alam, 28; but the dead student could not be identified immediately.
Munda, 52, is the third slain leader in Jharkhand falling to the bullets of extremists after JMM MP Sunil Mahato and CPI(ML-Liberation) MLA Mahendra Prasad Singh. Mahato was killed during a football match in 2007 while Singh was killed during election campaigning in 2005. The Maoist also killed Ex-Chief Minister Babulal Marandi’s son near Giridih in 2007.
The NDA led by BJP has declared a state-wide bandh in Jharkhand today to protest the killing of the Janata Dal United MLA.
