Sessions judge O.S.Jaisawal today sentenced Mohammad Munna Khan (40) and his wife Shehnaz Bano (37) to life imprisonment for first murdering their daughter Mehnaz Bano and then cutting her to pieces (10 pcs. precisely including severed head) on the basis of circumstantial evidence and confessions of the accused. Mehnaz’s sister Gulnaz, 15 at the time of crime, have been sent to a juvenile home for abetting murder.
The simple and straightforward case is that, on 1st July’06, Mehnaz, a Muslim girl, eloped with her neighbor Vidyanand Yadav, a Hindu boy, to Panvel and got married there. On getting informed by Mehnaz of their marriage, her parents rushed to Panvel and brought her back home on the promise of reconciliation.
On 2nd July’06, on routine petrol Inspector Atmaram Ghodpade saw a blood stained sack near J.J.Flyover in Byculla. “On opening the sack, I found a body chopped into pieces. Taking cue from the name printed on the gunny bag, we zeroed in on the accused within days” said Ghorpade who investigated the case.
Mary Nadar, the prime witness in the case and a neighbor of Khans said that the Khan Family had a bitter fight with Mehnaz after their return from Panvel.
According to the confessions of Mehnaz’s parents in the court, it was they who strangled Mehnaz, cut off her head before cutting her body into 10 pieces. They put the pieces in a gunny bag, took it to Byculla flyover on a bicycle and dumped it in a drain.
