ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and
Broadcasting Nisar A. Memon Thursday urged the media bodies to
call-off their strike as a Confidence Building Measure (CBM) as the
government was in touch with all the media organizations to resolve
all the media-related issues.
"The media was free and its freedom would stay. The government is in
touch with all the media bodies including the PFUJ, CPNE, APNS and the
PBA. As the government is waiting for proposals from the media bodies
to amend the code of conduct and the lists of the FIRs registered
against the journalists, the media organisations should call-off
strike as a CBM," said the Minister while talking to media here after
the Annual Day function of Smart School System here.
He said the interim government is mandated to hold free, fair
and impartial polls and it has taken initiatives to create an enabling
environment for the upcoming polls. However, the Minister said that
the interim government would consider any demand from the ARD and
APDM.
"The government has created an enabling environment for holding free
and fair polls by facilitating the return of exiled politicians. Now
as those political parties have sat together, we respect their opinion
and if they submit any demand, the government would consider it.
However, this decision has to be taken by them either they want to
submit their demands with President, the caretaker government or the
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)," he said.
The Minister said in categoric terms that the elections would be held
on time and there would be no delay even for a single day. The
election commission has released the election schedule and all the
government organs would facilitate the ECP in this regard, he added.
The Minister said the President has announced that the emergency
would be lifted and the 1973 Constitution would be restored by
December 16.
Earlier, while addressing the Annual Day ceremony of Smart School
System as Chief Guest, the Minister said the quality education was
need of the hour and the government would facilitate the private
sector to help ensure quality education.
"We have 160 million people which are a national asset. We have a
challenge to transform this asset into a resource. For the purpose,
quality education is a must and this would help character building of
our individuals," said the Minister adding that the character building
would help the nation develop as per modern trends and get the country
on top in the comity of nations.
The Minister, however, regretted that though Pakistan was a fast
developing country, yet some people questioned this process.
