Balasore (Orissa): In a bizarre incident, a 30-year-old woman from Orissa’s Balasore district has been chained to a pillar for seven years because she is mentally ill.
Maunabati, mother of a girl, developed the illness after she gave birth to her daughter and was chained because her parents couldn’t afford her treatment.
"When we unchained her, she became very violent. People in the village complained of getting hurt. So we had no other option but to chain her,” says Maunabati’s mother Kanakalata Kabi.
Maunabati is educated, was married nine years ago, but her husband dumped her and took their daughter away.
Maunabati’s parents are daily wage labourers. Initially, they took her to mental hospitals, but soon, the expenses became too high for them to bear.
"I have told all the local politicians and the administration about my problem but no one came out for help,” says Maunabati’s father Ramakanta Kabi.
CNN-IBN contacted Balasore District Collector Alekh Parihari, who promised immediate help. However, he says he needs more support.
"Apart from us, if any voluntary organisation, institution or individual come forward for her treatment and rehabilitation we will extend all possible help,” he says.
