Mexico’s government suspect that the police of Rosarito have been working with the drug gangs. Rosarito is near the border between Mexico and the United States. Along the border region, the drug gangs have a very strong influence.
This isn’t the first time that the Mexican army had cracked down on the police force. Troops did a crackdown on the Tijuana police force back in January. Rosarito’s police force has 200 guns. Each gun will be examined to see if any of them were used on the attack of the town’s police chief early in December.
One of the chief’s bodyguards was killed as a result of the attack.
Baja California police chief, Daniel de la Rosa explains that the enemy is in their house and that they need to purge the ranks. 25,000 troops were deployed to the region by Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
At least over 2,000 people have died in 2007 as a result of gangs fighting for turf.
