Miladin Kovacevic and Bryan Steinhauer got into a bar fight on May 4 during which Kovacevic beat Steinhauer into a coma. Miladin Kovacevic was charged with assault but, once his mother paid his $100,000 bail, he fled to his native Serbia.
Bryan Steinhauer, who is still unable to eat or walk more than two months after the fight, is fighting for his life. His parents want Miladin Kovacevic returned to America where he can faces the charges that have been leveled against him. Kovacevic’s mother has been quoted saying, "My son is not running away from justice, he’s running away from injustice." The Serbian government has been willing to comply but are not able to extraditet Kovacevic to the United States. He might be tried in Serbia.
The fight began when Bryan Steinhauer danced with the girlfriend of one of Kovacevic’s friends. Witnesses said that Kovacevic, a 6’9" basketball player, kicked and beat Steinhauer unmercifully as he lay on the ground. Both men were students at Binghamton University.
