Results from the November 4th Bluffton, SC Town Council Election were thrown out by Beaufort County Election Officials after it was discovered voters were denied their right to vote in the election. A new election for the two seats will be held on November 18th with three of the original four candidates running after the 4th place finisher dropped out. This new election comes after the third place finisher prostested after hearing of Bluffton Town residents being given incorrect ballots on Election Day. Only 22 votes separated the second and third place finisher. The reason for the mixups is precients in Bluffton had incorporated and unincorporated sections of Bluffton within its boundries. Busy poll workers apparently not prepared to determine who was who which led to honest mistakes that may have led to 122 residents not being allowed to vote.
Racism as motivation for the protest have been hinted by some townspeople. The two top voter getters are African-American while the last two are white. Hopefully, residents of Bluffton will see past this and realize there is concrete evidence of voting errors that need to be corrected.
This election is the only race that was protested.
