Phillies Shot At 100 Wins…..
Twice since 1883 the Philadelphia Phillies, originally called the Quakers, have reached the century mark in wins during the regular season.
In 1976 and 1977 they finished with identical records of 101-61. These were the first, second and only times to make that mark of 100 or more wins. Sorry to say that in both seasons they lost in the NLCS and did not make it to the World Series.
So that is history and this is 2011.
Currently the Phillies have a record that would make the casual observer believe that for the third time in history they may hit that 100 win level. This is something I personally would love to see but won’t be totally upset if they don’t quite get there. As long as they
are in the World Series and win, my day will be made.
Looking at the schedule for August and September they very well could hit the 100 win mark playing a little better than .500 ball.
In August they play 28 games, sixteen away games and twelve at home. In September they are scheduled for 27 games seventeen are away games and fourteen are at home.
Starting today August 01, the Phillies are 68-39 needing 32 wins for 100. I’ll gladly take playing four games over .500 in August and ending the month with a record of 16-12.
Their record entering September would be 84-51. September would have to end with a record of 16-11, to make my day and a 100 win season. Final record 100-62.
Looking at this season so far they are right there to do the deal.
Just one more reason why I love baseball, the mind game within the game of records.
I’m one of those grateful baseball fans, once again the Phillies gave me a good season to date and I’m really looking forward to the final two months and the post season.
Yes I know things happen , but my money is on the Phillies to win it all, 100 wins or not.
