FRIDAY QUICK HITS

Boston gets their first win of the year! They defeated the New York Yankees 9-6 in their home opener getting twelve hits in front of 37,178 fans (many  Yankee fans in that number!) John Lackey (1-1) pitched five innings giving up six runs on seven hits but got the win with the Boston bats behind him. Alex  Rodriguez hit his 616th career home run for the Yankees. Sox are 1-6 and the Yankees are now 4-3.

San Francisco scored the winning run in the home 12th to down St.Louis 5-4. This was the Giants home opener and the fans enjoyed all four hours and 24 minutes of baseball. The Giants got to raise their World Series flag with the win.  It took eight pitchers but Dan Runzler gets the win pitching a perfect 12th.

The Phillies played the Atlanta Braves and lost 6-3. Cliff Lee started for the Phils but lasted only 3 1-3 innings giving up ten hits and all six runs. Lee is now 1-1 on the season. Tim Hudson pitched a good game for Atlanta and allowed three runs on eight hits for the win, he is now 2-0. Chipper Jones had two hits for Atlanta giving him 2,500 for his career. Jones is the ninth
switch-hitter to reach this milestone. He also had three RBIs to total 1,497. If chipper drives in three more he will tie Eddie Murray as the ony switch- hitters with at least 2,500 hits and 1,500 RBIs.

In their 50th home opener the Mets lost to the Nationals 6-2. It was cold, 42 degrees, and not much fun for the Mets fans. R.A.Dickey takes the loss for New York and is now 1-1. Dickey only gave up three runs on six hits but got  little run support from his team. Jordan Zimmermann is now 1-1 for Washington  as he went 5.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits walked none and had
four strikeouts. Zimmermann also aided his cause with a bases loaded hit to drive in two runs.

Final team standing was Pittsburgh and after fourteen innings, fifteen pitchers and five hours, the Pirates win 5-4.The game started with 29,000 fans and at the final bell only the die-hards remained. Garrett Olson (1-1) pitched two innings and got the win.
