WEDNESDAY QUICK HITS
The Phillies were on a two game losing streak, the first this year and neededhelp down 3-0 going to the bottom of the sixth. Placido Polanco to the rescue, with two on in the sixth a nice three run home run to tie the game. Shane Victorino to the rescue in the eighth with a solo shot to break the tie and give the Phillies a much needed win. Cliff Lee went six innings giving up three runs, Kyle Kendrick a perfect seventh, Ryan Madson a one hit, one walk eighth and Jose Contreras a one hit ninth for his fourth save. Chris Narveson started for Milwaukee, went six innings allowing three runs on four hits. The loss goes to Brandon Kintzler who is now 1-1. Prince Fielder was three for three with a walk and two RBI. Final score Phillies 4, Brewers 3, the Brewers take two out of three from the Phillies. The first series loss for the Phillies this year.
The Washington Nationals played game one at St. Louis in front of the worst crowd attendance in St. Louis since September 14th 1989. In 1989 it was 1,519 for a makeup game and today’s makeup game was 8,686. It did not bother the Nationals as they beat the Cardinals 8-6. John Lannan (2-1) gets the win for the Nationals, Drew Storen gets his second save. Laynce Nix went long for the Nationals his second of the year, was two for four and two RBI. The Cardinals out hit the Nationals 14-10 with two home runs, one by Albert Pujols (5) and the other by Colby Rasmus his second this season. Not enough as the Cardinals fall by a final score of 8-6. Starter Jake Westbrook (1-3) gets the loss lasting only three innings giving up seven runs on seven hits.
Two home runs helped the Rockies defeat San Francisco but De La Rosa in his third win had much to do with the outcome. Jorge De La Rosa pitched seven strong innings giving up two runs on just four hits, striking out six with two walks. Home runs by Ty Wigginton (1) and Ryan Spilborgs (2) helped the Rockies cause and were two hits of the thirteen hit attack.
The final was 10-2, the loss was Giants Matt Cain’s (2-1) first of the year.
Boston put a stop to their longest season-opening road losing streak in franchise history today by beating Oakland 5-3. Before today they had lost seven straight road games. J.D.Drew had his first home run of the season. Drew was joined by Kevin Youkilis (3) and Jed Lowrie (3) going deep for Boston.
Clay Bucholz (1-2) got his first win for the Sox and Jonathan Papelbon gets his third save. Oakland had a home run from Coco Crisp but could ony manage three runs on twelve hits. Gio Gonzalez (2-1) gets the loss for Oakland giving up four runs on eight hits in six innings.
