WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2011: SCHEDULE-STARTING PITCHERS- TV
SCORES, TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2011
TUESDAY QUICK HITS
NEW YORK METS @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
The last twelve games Vance Worley started, including today, the Phillies have won. This has not happened with a rookie pitcher since Bobby Witt did it with Texas in 1986. Another good night for the Phillies, Vance Worley, and a guy named John Mayberry Jr.
Vance is now 9-1 and sporting an ERA of 2.65. As I mentioned before twelve wins in a row with Vance on the mound.
Tonight he went seven innings allowing a single run, five hits, one walk and a career high nine K’s. Michael Stutes did the final two innings and allowed three runs on four hits but preserved the Phillies win with a final score of 9-4.
Then there is that guy John Mayberry Jr. Tonight he filled in for Ryan Howard and went two for four with three RBI, also collecting his twelfth homer of the year. On Monday Mayberry filled in for Raul Ibanez and also homered in that game. His last recall was on July 5th and since then he has nine home runs, 29 RBIs and is batting
.326, all in 31 games. John has been up and down to the majors three times this season.
Mayberry wants to stay and is doing his best to prove his worth. I think he is a keeper and this time he will be here for the long term.
Philadelphia scored nine runs on thirteen hits. Shane Victorino was two for five with three RBI connecting for his fourteenth home run and as many triples. Placido Polanco was two for five and Ben Francisco went three for three. Vance Worley also got into the act going two for three with one RBI and scoring two runs.
Jonathon Niese (11-11) started for the Mets and gets the loss. Niese went four innings allowing eight runs on ten hits.
Philadelphia goes 3-44 and New York is 60-68.
