Research into the causes of obesity is an ongoing one and every piece of little information that emerges from time to time from small to big studies matters in throwing some light on the causes of obesity. Here is yet another study which though may be small in nature may be a precursor for larger studies to validate the results.
The gist of this study is that obese people are driven into further obesity because of their genetic programming. it is because of the prevalence of this gene in them that they are driven into consuming more and more calories involuntarily.
This study was conducted on 150 volunteers aged between 21 and 60 from Scotland by Aberdeen University. The study came to the conclusion that a gene code named ‘FTO’ found in obese people was responsible for this behavior in them.
These subjects were monitored for their food intake over seven days during which time their blood samples, resting behaviour and other measurements relating to physical fitness etc were examined. The results showed that people with the variant ‘gene’ ate between 120 and 200 calories per day more than the ones who did not have this gene.
As already pointed out the result of this study has to be taken with all the caution it needs as the sample size is small and duration of the study very short.;nevertheless, it can form the basis for further empirical testing.
