Do you think it’s that easy to debate on a topic like "This house would limit the sovereignty of the states that fail to address piracy"? Well, no. It’s not. Especially when you’re not a native-speaker.
Moscow Open 2008 took place in MGIMO. It was the biggest debating championship ever held in Russia – 48 teams (2 persons in each) from 6 countries, including Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus. A lot of emotions and amazing people, a great chance to improve your skills of public speaking, problem analysis, argumentation, critical and structured thinking (http://mgimodc.ru/)
It was organized by Eugene Akulich and Anton Pleshakov, and supported by Procter&Gamble. Among adjudicator there was Andy Hume (CA), David Powell, Dirk Harlacher and many other experienced debaters.
All the participants have proven, that you’ve got to be really ambitious, open-minded and easy-going to take part in such events.
Team called "Joga Bonita" won (Robert Ustyan, who also became the best speaker, and Yuriy Boyarshinov).
Well, debating movement develops in Russia, and Andy Hume agrees with that. Those who have persistence and who once tried to debate will always be fans of it, and this hobby will do a lot for a person.
