Those of you who read every one of my essays on Ground Report know that I am slowly reading Go Forward, the collected letters of Swami Premeshananda, a saintly monk from the Ramakrishna Order who died in 1967. In fact, I have finished all the letters, and have now begun Appendix A, "Reminiscences of Swami Premeshananda" by Swami Saradeshananda (written in Vrindavan in 1967). Today I read:
"His ancestors had acquired vast stretches of land as gifts in the Vijni state of Assam and the Serpur district of Mymensing."
Mymensing! I am tempted to write the poem:
My Men
My men sing
in Mymensing.
But some Bengali eight year old probably already wrote this verse, in 1931.
