Net Surfing: American Seniors surpass the Youger Generation

A growing number of older Americans are going online which is gradually outstripping the dominance of 18 to 44 years olds who so far has comprised half of the web population.

According to the results of a study conducted by Washington based Pew Research Center, since 2005 the largest online gain has been made by Americans in the age group of 70 to 75. Their proportion of being on line has jumped from 26% in 2005 to 46% in 2008.

However, in term is  of the overall usage, it is the teens of 12-17 years who garner the limelight. 94% belonging to this age group have been on line as against 89% in 2005.

Email is the most preferred favorite of the older people whereas teens seem to prefer online entertainment. Out of them 78% play video games, 68% use instant messaging, 59% download music, 49% read blogs while 10% visit virtual world.

The statistics would aid the internet companies in chalking out their marketing strategies.
