ET San Diego Chargers at Pittsburg Steelers STEELERS AFC North Division Champions: Pittsburgh captured its second straight AFC North Division championship after its 13-9 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15. Divisional Dominance: Pittsburgh finished the 2008 season Conference Control: The Steelers finished the season with a 12-4 mark, including an impressive 10-2 record against AFC opponents. LOOKING AHEAD… If the Steelers defeat the San Diego Chargers in the Blanking The Browns: Pittsburgh recorded its first shutout of the 2008 season when it defeated the Cleveland Browns, 31-0, at Heinz Field in Week 17. It marked the first shutout for Pittsburgh since it won 3-0 over the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 26, 2007. Shutting Down The Scoreboard: Dominating Defense: Sustaining Success: Pittsburgh has made the playoffs five times The following is a list of teams that have won the most division Team….Playoffs….Divisional Titles Indianapolis 7…5 2008 FINAL REGULAR SEASON Steelers…………………………… Category…………………….. Opponents CHARGERS The Matchup The San Diego Chargers will make a return visit to the “Steel City” to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC Divisional Playoff game at Heinz Field on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 4:45 pm EST (1:45 pm PST). Owners of the longest active winning streak among the remaining playoff teams (five games), the Chargers will be looking to avenge the 11-10 loss dealt to them by the Steelers on Nov. 16 at Heinz Field. CBS will televise the game with its top announcing team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms in the broadcast booth. In the last two weeks, the Chargers avenged earlier losses to Denver and Indianapolis to get to this Sunday’s game. The Denver win enabled the Bolts to capture the 2008 AFC West title and into the playoffs, and the Indianapolis win in the Wild Card round set up Sunday’s Divisional matchup with the Steelers. The Chargers are 2-0 all-time against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. The Chargers are the only team to win their division title the past three seasons (2006-08), and under Norv Turner, the Bolts are 12-1 in the months of December and January. Redemption opportunities for Rivers and Turner This game will also offer a chance at redemption for Chargers starting quarterback and postseason honors candidate, Philip Rivers, who was intercepted twice and completed just 15 of 26 passes for 164 yards and a season-low passer rating of 44.4 in the first meeting between the two teams. Following that game however, Rivers went on to post passer ratings of 96.0 or better in five of the Chargers’ last six games while leading the Bolts into the playoffs. The Chargers will look to Rivers to have a similar performance to the one he turned in against the Steelers in 2006 when he went 24 of 37 for 242 yards with two TDs and one INT in a 23-13 win. Finally, this game not only offers Head Coach Norv Turner a shot at redemption against the Steelers, but also a chance to lead the Chargers into the AFC Championship Game for the second year in a row. Turner, who owns the best postseason record in team history (4-2), is 0-3 against Pittsburgh as a head coach, but the three losses have come by just five combined points, including a one-point loss earlier this year and another with Washington in 1997. Series History The Chargers and Steelers have had a memorable history in the postseason with the Chargers defeating Pittsburgh in two previous encounters, including a 31-28 win in a Wild Card game following the 1982 season and again in the AFC Championship Game (17-13) following the 1994 season, sending the Chargers on to Super Bowl XXIX. Both wins occurred at Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh is just 3-3 in playoff games played at Heinz Field. All told, the Bolts and Steelers have met 28 total times, including playoffs. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series, 20-8. NFL and Team Reports
