In its bid to present a formidable team at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Special Olympics Nigeria (SON), has stepped up preparations for the Games scheduled for Shanghai, China in October.
According to the National Director of Special Olympics Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Bolumole, the organization has started preparation for the 3rd phase camping scheduled to begin Sunday August 26 at Gateway International Stadium Ijebu Ode, Ogun State for its athletes.
Special Olympics, Bolumole , said would hold the fourth camping sessions before the world games and hopes to conclude session before the team’s departure to China.
The aim of this camping session according to the Sports Manager, Mr. Christian Emeruwa is to prepare Special Olympics Nigeria Athletes for Competitive experience and good performance during the world games.
The third camping session which took place in June was aimed at providing medium training load to athletes bearing in mind that they are still on the pre-competition period of their training schedule.
Special Olympics Nigeria has so far organized 63 out of the planned 86 competitions in different sports across four geo-political zones in Nigeria namely; South-West, South East, and North Central.
Bolumole thanked organizations that have partnered with SONigeria and called on others to sponsor the team adding that the special athletes should be supported to do Nigeria proud at the summer games.
"So far, organizations like MTN, GTBank Plc, First Bank Nigeria Plc, Toyota Nigeria Limited and members of the SO Nigeria Board have partnered with us towards ensuring the success of this event. Of the 30million naira budgeted for the successful outing of the delegates to China, we have been able to raise 13.6million with a shortfall of 16.4million".
